Can a referral credit cross a border with you?
Three separate bindings hold a referral reward in place: the account it sits on, the car that spends it, and the market whose terms defined it. Cross-border questions are always about which of those three has changed. Dated 2 September 2026.
Binding 1 — the account
Tesla Credits are held on an account and are documented as non-transferable and non-reissuable. Moving country does not move the balance to a new account, because there is no new account: the same account travels with you.
Binding 2 — the car
A Supercharging allowance is drawn down by a Tesla on the account, authenticated at the stall before any payment method is touched. That is why an allowance cannot be spent by another brand's car even at a Supercharger open to other brands — the non-Tesla authenticates through its own account, which cannot see a Tesla balance.
Binding 3 — the market
The reward's shape was set by the market the order was placed in: a software trial in North America, roughly 2,000 km of charging in mainland Europe since April 2026, roughly 650 miles in the UK. Relocating does not convert one into another, and no mechanism exists to request a conversion.
What actually happens when you move
A charging allowance remains spendable at Superchargers, and its value changes because local tariffs differ — the same kilometres displace more money in an expensive market than a cheap one. Credits remain redeemable through the Loot Box, and what the Loot Box offers varies by market. Nothing is lost by moving; nothing is gained either.
The case people actually ask about
Buying in one country and registering in another, which is a well-trodden path inside the EU for reasons that have nothing to do with referrals. The referral consequence is narrow: the reward follows the store the order was placed in, so a buyer ordering in one market gets that market's reward regardless of where the car ends up. The VAT, registration-tax and delivery questions in that decision dwarf any referral consideration, and this atlas will not pretend otherwise.
The one binding that can be lost entirely
The car. Tesla's published terms do not address what happens to an unspent allowance when a vehicle is sold, so the bounded reading is the honest one: credits are non-transferable and non-reissuable, and an allowance is spent by charging. Treat an unspent allowance as worthless to a new owner and to you once the car has gone — and spend it before a sale.
What to check on your own account
The balance, its Grant Date and its type. Credits run 12 months from that date; charging distance runs six. Your market's reward figure is on its country page; the bindings above are the same in every one of them.

Can I move a Tesla referral credit to another country?
The balance stays on the account, and credits cannot be transferred to another person or account. What changes across a border is what the balance can be spent on and at what local price.
Does the reward depend on where the code's owner lives?
