Why the Tesla referral benefit changed in 2026 (S/X out, FSD in)
In March 2026 Tesla reworked the referral program: cash discounts out, an FSD trial in for North America, and Model S/X dropped. Here's what changed and what it means for you as a buyer.
What actually changed
- Cash discounts retired in North America, replaced by 3 months of free FSD (Supervised).
- Model S and Model X removed — no buyer benefit on either since March 2026.
- Cybertruck narrowed to Premium AWD & Cyberbeast (Dual-Motor AWD excluded).
- Regions diverged further — the UK/EU stayed on free Supercharging because FSD isn't approved there; the Netherlands then became the first EU market to approve FSD.
Why the regions diverged, and what actually drives it
The change list above has one line that deserves the whole section: regions diverged further. That is not Tesla treating markets arbitrarily, and understanding the mechanism lets you predict what your own market will offer without reading a single referral page.
The buyer benefit tracks whether FSD (Supervised) is legally usable where you are. Tesla cannot give away three months of something a regulator has not cleared for road use, so in markets where FSD is available the reward became FSD months, and everywhere else it stayed as free Supercharging. One rule, different outcomes.

The exception that proves the rule is not automatic
Read the Netherlands row again, because it is the most useful line in the table. The Dutch regulator approved FSD in April 2026 — and the European referral reward is still denominated in Supercharging distance months later.
So approval is necessary but not sufficient. Two separate decisions have to line up: a regulator has to clear the system, and then Tesla has to choose to put it in the referral programme for that market. In North America both happened. In the Netherlands only the first has.
That matters for anyone reading approval news as a forecast. When FSD clears in Germany, or the UK, the referral will not change that day, or necessarily at all. The Dutch precedent is four months old and counting. Any page telling you an FSD trial is coming to your market because approval is coming has skipped the second step.
How to work out your own market without trusting anyone
The practical version, which survives every future change to this table:
- Check what your country's Tesla support page says — not a referral site, and not a support page for a different country. The benefit is set per market, so a US page is simply the wrong document.
- Do not infer from a neighbour. Belgium and Germany share a border and, on this, do not share a regulatory position.
- Confirm in your own order summary before paying. Whatever any page says, including this one, the line in your summary is the only statement that binds anything.
And the reason to bother: the two rewards are not interchangeable. An FSD trial is a time-limited software subscription that you either use or waste. Supercharging distance is stored energy value that depends on how you charge. Getting told you will receive one and receiving the other is a genuinely different purchase, which is why the market-by-market accuracy on this site is not pedantry.
Why it matters for buyers
If you were relying on an old "cash off" or "S/X bonus" claim from a stale referral site, it no longer applies. The current, correct benefit depends entirely on your country and model — which is the whole reason this site is organised the way it is.
