Why Tesla's referral terms differ by country at all

A single programme name pays a three-month software trial in one country and free charging in another. That is not an accident of translation, and it is not arbitrary. Three mechanisms explain almost all of it, dated 2 September 2026.

Mechanism 1 — regulatory approval decides whether a trial is even possible

North America's referral benefit is three months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised). A benefit shaped like a software trial requires the software to be legally usable, which is a national approval question rather than a commercial one. Where supervised driving is not deployed, a trial cannot be the reward — so the programme pays something else.

That is why the European reward is Supercharging distance and not FSD, and why five individual EU approvals in 2026 did not produce an EU-wide referral trial. Approval is granted by market; a benefit follows it.

Mechanism 2 — the reward is denominated in whatever the market meters

Charging rewards are quoted in kilometres in mainland Europe and in miles in the UK, because that is how each market measures driving. It sounds trivial and it produces the most-copied error in this niche: mainland Europe's roughly 2,000 km and the UK's roughly 650 miles (about 1,046 km) are not the same reward in different units — the mainland figure is close to twice the distance.

Tariff structure matters too. A distance-denominated reward is worth whatever the local per-kWh price would have been, so the same 2,000 km is worth materially more in a market with expensive rapid charging than in one with cheap electricity.

Mechanism 3 — local consumer and tax law shapes what can be given

A programme that hands a buyer a price reduction interacts with local rules on advertising, VAT and price-capped incentives. A programme that hands a buyer a service — charging or software — usually does not. This desk cannot see Tesla's legal reasoning, so it will not claim one; what can be observed is that the reward shape varies along exactly the lines where those regimes differ.

What does not vary, anywhere

  • The referral attaches when the order is placed, through the link, and cannot be added afterwards.
  • One referral per transaction, and a vehicle order and an energy order are separate transactions.
  • The referrer is paid in Tesla Credits, capped at the first ten successful referrals per calendar year.
  • Credits expire 12 months from the Grant Date; charging distance expires in six.

Those four sentences hold in every market this atlas covers, which is why they are worth learning once rather than per country.

Why the eligible-model list is global and the reward is not

Eligibility travels: Model 3, Model Y and specific Cybertruck trims are in, and Model S and Model X left the programme in March 2026 everywhere. The reward does not travel. So a page can be right about which cars qualify and completely wrong about what they earn — which is exactly the failure mode of a directory that lists one figure for the world.

How to use this when reading any referral page

Ask which market the page is describing before you read its figure. If it does not name one, it is quoting one market's answer at everyone. Then confirm your own market's figure on its country page, and confirm your own order's figure on the order summary before payment — the only screen that is never out of date.

Questions this raises

Is there one global Tesla referral benefit?

No. The programme is one name over several market-specific rewards. North America pays a software trial, mainland Europe pays Supercharging distance, and the UK pays a smaller distance figure again.

Does the code's country matter?

No — the reward is set by the market you order in, not by where the code's owner lives. What matters is which country's store you complete the order in.
