Tesla's 2026 Model Y lineup got noticeably wider on 2 July 2026, when the six-seat Model Y L launched at the top of the range. The referral FSD trial doesn't move with that price ladder at all — which means, expressed as a percentage of what you're actually paying, it quietly shrinks the higher you climb. Here's the math, dated July 13, 2026.

The reward is fixed — the price tag isn't

Tesla's full 2026 Model Y all-in pricing, including the $1,640 in fees applied across the lineup, now runs from the Standard RWD at $41,630 up to the new Model Y L at $63,630 (the Y L's Launch Series is priced at $61,990 before those fees). Across that entire range, the North American referral reward stays exactly the same: 3 months of free FSD (Supervised), worth ≈ $297 at Tesla's $99/month rate.

The math: referral value as a share of price

That's not a rounding artifact — it's simple division: $297 is roughly 0.71% of $41,630, and the same $297 is roughly 0.47% of $63,630. Buy the pricier trim and the referral perk is worth the same in dollars but a third less as a proportion of the sale.

Why this shrinking percentage doesn't actually matter

It's a real number, but not a useful decision-making one. The referral trial was never priced as a percentage of the car — it's a flat, per-order perk, so a shrinking share simply reflects the price climbing, not the perk getting worse. Nobody should downgrade to a cheaper trim purely to make the referral discount look bigger as a percentage; that's optimizing a ratio that has no bearing on what you actually paid or what you actually need from the car.

What does matter for long-term value: incentives that don't shrink the same way

The more useful long-term comparison is against the local government incentives this site tracks separately, several of which this site's own country pages describe as worth more than the referral outright, regardless of trim:

None of these move in lockstep with the Model Y's sticker price the way the referral's percentage-of-price does — they're set by tax and subsidy rules, not by which trim you pick. That's the more durable long-term lever to actually weigh against a higher trim, not the referral trial's shrinking share.

The one number in this whole picture that doesn't shrink: the referrer side

Worth noting for existing owners: the referrer reward stays at $250 in Tesla Credits per successful referral, capped at 10 a year — up to $2500 — regardless of which trim the friend they referred ends up buying. A referred friend ordering the priciest Model Y L is worth exactly the same to the referrer as one ordering the Standard RWD.
