Referral & Loyalty Overhaul: What It Costs Per Mile
In March 2026 Tesla restructured both its referral and loyalty programs at once. Most coverage lists what changed; fewer people ask what it actually does to the cost of owning the car, mile for mile. Here's that math, dated July 13, 2026.
What changed, specifically
- Model S and Model X were removed from referral-eligible vehicles — the benefit now covers Model 3, Model Y and eligible Cybertruck configurations only.
- The referrer reward stayed at $250 in Tesla Credits (or the local equivalent) per successful referral.
- The separate loyalty discount on premium vehicles was cut from $1,000 to $500 for repeat buyers.
- Referral and loyalty credits now expire 12 months after the Grant Date.
The cost-per-mile math for the North America FSD trial
The North America buyer benefit is 3 months of free FSD (Supervised), worth ≈ $297 at Tesla's $99/month rate. Spread that over a commonly-used ownership benchmark of 12,000 miles a year across three years (36,000 miles), and it works out to roughly 0.8¢ per mile — but only as a cash-equivalent, and only if you would have paid for FSD anyway. If you wouldn't have subscribed, the real effect on your cost per mile is zero, because a software trial doesn't touch the car's purchase price or loan principal the way the old cash discount did.
That's the real shift: price cut vs. software trial
A straight cash discount lowers the amount you finance, which lowers every single monthly payment and therefore every mile you drive on that loan. A free trial of a subscription product doesn't — it only has value if you were already going to buy that subscription. Buyers comparing the "old" cash-discount referral era to today's FSD-trial era should judge it on that basis, not by treating $297 and an old-era discount as interchangeable numbers.
Repeat buyers feel the loyalty cut directly
The loyalty-discount reduction from $1,000 to $500 is a plainer cost-per-mile hit for existing owners trading into another premium vehicle: it's $500 less taken directly off the price, which — unlike the FSD trial — does lower what you finance and therefore does lower your cost per mile, by a small but real amount. Stack that against the S/X referral removal and a repeat buyer moving between premium models has genuinely less cash-equivalent value on the table than in the pre-2026 program.
Don't let credits expire unused
Because referral and loyalty credits now expire 12 months after the Grant Date, banking on "using them eventually" no longer works — factor the expiry into your own cost-per-mile math the same way you'd factor in any use-it-or-lose-it benefit.

Questions this raises
Does the FSD trial actually lower the car's cost per mile?
Not in the way a cash discount would. A software trial doesn't reduce the vehicle's purchase price or loan principal, so it has no effect on your amortized cost per mile unless you would have paid for FSD yourself anyway — in which case it's a real, if narrow, saving.
Is the loyalty discount the same thing as the referral benefit?
No — they're two separate Tesla programs that were restructured in the same March 2026 update. The referral benefit rewards using someone's code; the loyalty discount rewards existing owners buying again. Confirm both independently in your order summary.
