The full journey, in order

Most buyers don't go from zero to ordering in one sitting. A realistic journey looks like: research the model, book and take a test drive, get a trade-in valuation on your current car, get pre-approved for financing, then configure and order. Only two of those five steps actually interact with your referral session — configuring and ordering — which means the other three are safe to do whenever suits you.

Test drives — anytime, no interaction at all

Booking or taking a test drive doesn't touch the referral system in any way. Tesla's test-drive booking flow is entirely separate from the configurator and order flow, so there's no wrong time to book one relative to your referral link — do it first, do it last, it makes no difference.

Trade-in valuation — get it early, it doesn't expire your referral

A trade-in estimate is its own tool, generated from your current car's details. Getting one weeks before you're ready to order doesn't put your referral session at risk, because you haven't opened the referral link yet at that point — there's nothing to expire. The two processes simply run side by side later, at the order step.

Financing pre-approval — also independent

The same logic applies to financing. Getting pre-approved through a bank or through Tesla's own financing option is a separate check that doesn't touch the configurator session your referral link creates. You can sort financing first and click the link second, or the reverse — neither order affects the other.

The one step that has to come last, before configuring

Here's the actual constraint: your referral link has to be the last thing you open before you start building your car. Test drives, trade-in valuations and financing pre-approval can happen in any order, at any point earlier in your journey — but the referral click needs to be fresh, on the same device, right before you touch the configurator, because that's the session it attaches to.

A dated worked example

Say today (July 13, 2026) a reader books a test drive for this weekend, gets a trade-in estimate on their current car the same week, and doesn't plan to actually order until mid-August once financing is sorted. The right sequence is: test drive whenever, trade-in estimate whenever, financing pre-approval whenever — then, on the day they actually sit down to configure in August, open the referral link first, on the device they'll finish the order on, and only then start building the car. Everything earlier in the timeline was free to reorder; that last step wasn't.

Why people get this wrong

The mistake isn't usually clicking too early — it's assuming the earlier journey steps "use up" or interfere with a referral somehow, and either avoiding a test drive until after clicking a link (unnecessary) or configuring casually "just to look" before circling back to add a code (which can genuinely cost you the benefit, since Tesla can't attach one retroactively once an order exists). Treat the early steps as free to do in any order, and treat the final click-then-configure sequence as the only part that's fixed.
