Does a Tesla Referral Link Affect Your EV Incentive?

A referral link only ever touches Tesla's own checkout — but buyers reasonably ask whether accepting that reward could jeopardize a separate government incentive they're counting on. Here's an honest, country-by-country answer, dated July 13, 2026.

What the referral link actually changes

Clicking a referral link attaches one of three things to your order, depending on your country: a free FSD (Supervised) trial, a Supercharging credit, or a cash-style discount. In every case it's Tesla adjusting what Tesla gives you at its own checkout. It is not a change to the vehicle's registration, ownership structure, emissions rating, or your income — the inputs that most government EV incentives actually use.

United States — the federal credit and the FSD trial don't touch each other

The federal clean-vehicle credit is governed by the vehicle's price, battery-sourcing rules and your income — none of which a free FSD trial changes, since FSD isn't a price reduction at all. The one figure to watch is Tesla's separate $400 solar referral discount, which is a price reduction; if you're also claiming a price-capped incentive on a solar purchase specifically, confirm the current MSRP/price cap with the IRS rather than assuming a $400 discount is too small to matter.

UK & Germany & Netherlands — tax rules run on the car's price and CO₂, not a referral perk

UK company-car Benefit-in-Kind, Germany's Dienstwagen 0.25% rule and Dutch bijtelling are all calculated from the vehicle's list price (P11D value, Bruttolistenpreis, or catalogusprijs respectively) and its emissions — figures set at the point of sale by Tesla's own pricing, before any referral Supercharging credit is added. Because the referral reward here is Supercharging km, not a price cut, it has no bearing on any of these calculations. Confirm the underlying list price is right; don't worry about the referral credit changing it.

France & Spain — the incentive depends on the factory and your income, not the referral

France's bonus écologique depends on where the car was built (Berlin-built Model Y qualifies; Shanghai-built Model 3 does not) and your household income — both facts about the vehicle and the buyer, unrelated to Supercharging credit from a referral. Spain's Plan Auto+ and IRPF deduction work the same way: administered separately, calculated from the car and your tax situation, not from anything Tesla adds at checkout.

Australia — the one market worth double-checking yourself

Australia is the exception worth naming plainly: the referral reward here is a cash-style discount, not a trial or credit — meaning it can genuinely lower the price you're charged. The FBT exemption for eligible EVs is tied to a fuel-efficient vehicle price threshold. A discount that shifts your final price closer to (or further from) that threshold is the one scenario on this page where a referral could theoretically interact with an incentive's eligibility. If your order sits close to the threshold, confirm the exact post-discount price against the current ATO threshold before assuming eligibility either way.

A code that only touches Tesla's own checkout Confirm any price-threshold incentive separately, especially in Australia.

The code is in the toolbar above (tap Copy). This referral link opens Tesla's official store with the benefit attached — always confirm it shows in your order summary before you pay. We may earn Tesla Credits; it costs you nothing.

The rule that holds almost everywhere

With that one Australian caveat, a referral benefit and a government EV incentive are calculated by two entirely separate systems: Tesla's own promotional program, and a tax or grant authority working from the car's price, emissions or your income. Stacking them is normal and expected — that's the entire point of the local-incentive stacking guide on this site — the question here was narrower: whether accepting one could cost you the other, and for all but a price-threshold edge case, it doesn't.

For what each incentive is actually worth, see stack a referral code with local incentives; for who administers each one and how you actually claim it, see claim incentives after your referral link.
